TS3100, TS3122, TS3151 Printer Reviews– The Canon TS3100, TS3122, TS3151 is an inexpensive inkjet multifunction periphery (MFP) for people who don’t print as often. It’s about as unfussy as we’d expect for its £40 price tag, but it has support for wireless networking: You can plug it in and share it on all PCs and mobile devices at home. It is small, lightweight and looks inoffensive and is available in black (the TS3150) or white (the TS3151).

At the back there is a simple sheet of paper, at the front a similarly utilitarian edition, which actually kept everything impressive when printing. When not in use, the rear plate rotates as a lid. Canon has splashed a few more buttons than we’d expect above: You get to cancel the usual job and black and monostart buttons, but there are also a few extra ones that help operate a small mono LCD window that shows simple status messages. In theory, it’s a step up from entry-level controls, but in practice we found the extra features largely unfathomable.

Still, this is a simple MFP to install. Canon’s setup program can typically detect it wirelessly without the user having a configuration, but if all else fails, it falls back on a temporary USB connection to set up wireless access. Unlike more expensive Pixmas, the Canon TS3100, TS3122, TS3151 with a black ink cartridge, along with another with cyan, magenta and yellow.

In theory, that’s more wasteful than having separate cartridges for each color, and in practice it makes printing costs a little high. Using the XL sizes, we calculated the colour component of an A4 page with a not unreasonable 5.4p, but the black component was an eyebrow-raising 4.3p.

We don’t expect the cheapest devices to be superb all-rounders, and the Canon TS3100, TS3122, TS3151 weakness is their pressure speed: This peaked at 7.4 pages per minute (ppm) for black text and dived as low as 1.6mm For color graphics, the lowest we’ve recorded. Sometime. It takes you two and a half minutes to print a colour photo in the best quality, and you won’t be able to do it on A4; Although the driver has the job created and shipped, the printer will not print on A4 photo paper.

With 26 seconds in black and 57 seconds in color, copy options weren’t fast either, but scanning speeds compared to even medium-range devices. Connected via USB, it took just 37 seconds for us to take a 6 x 4in photo at 1,200 points per inch (dpi).

Our scan and copy tests showed vertical lines throughout the length of the document, something we have never seen from a Canon scanner. Unfortunately, our review unit had gotten wet in transit, and we are confident that our question was an isolated issue probably related to that.
